We drove down from our cottage on Sunday. It is nice to be here with the ac in this awful heat. And it was getting hot even at the lake. Our week at the cottage with the blond grands was fun. They were busy all the time. Their dad made the trip up for a long weekend and they went home with him.
KTG and her mommy were with us for the entire time with her daddy driving back for work after the 4th, then back up for the weekend. But poor KTG developed a fever on Friday and had to lie low the rest of the weekend. She was on the beach and in the lake before then. Another Beach Bum in the family. She approaches things with such joy that it is truly fun to watch her.
She caught on to digging in the sand and shell collecting very quickly. Her older cousins loved watching her and playing with her. They kicked ball around the lawn and patiently watched as she picked it up and walked off with it. After a few days, she was kicking it too and looking very proud. She tried the tiniest bit of her mommy's S'more as her cousins tried experimenting with the recipe. They used chocolate chip cookies and oreos in place of the graham crackers , and then egged on by their Aunt B, used Peanut butter cups instead of chocolate squares! Pronoounced their creations as the "best ever".
Our oldest and youngest grand daughters are bonded! THey light up when they are together.
We head back up tomorrow. My husband's cousin, her daughter and so in law and their kids are coming for a long weekend. The heat is breaking so we look forward to more beach fires, S'mores. long walks on the beach and lots of music and laughter. This part of the family are muscians and bring ukeleles and guitars and fiddles with them.
More lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.
Yesterday we were under high wind warnings all day. Followed by a tornado watch all night. The lake was in turmoil all day with huge whitecaps. But that didn't deter the duck family from taking a swim.
The St. Lawrence Seaway was a boon to shipping and commerce but it has left it mark on the lakes. FIrst, the Lamprey eels came in attached to ship bottoms and then attached to water pipes, fish, etc. and it cost a fortune to get rid of them and bring the fishing back to normal. Now the shoreline is covered with Zebra Mussel shells. Messy. Not pretty. And causing problems elsewhere. I firmly believe the ocean going ships should be forced to clean their ballast before entering the St. Lawrence River. Who knows what they may bring with them next?
And this is what I woke up to this morning.
and this is what I spent my afternoon doing. You must understand, we are far enough north in latitude that to plant any earlier is to plan on losing every flower !I
I have been reading and knitting and relaxing in the evening. The days we spend here always pass so quickly and soon it will be time to head back downstate and responsibilty!
Sand pails were out! Shells were collected!
Taking a first dip, completely clothed was participated in by two of the grands...KTG, and her redheaded 2 year old boy cousin, J. This tradition began in 1996 with the blond grand daughter, T...who went in and refused to leave. She sobbed all the way back from the beach. There was no sobbing this time...only giggles of glee. And yes, folks, the water was chilly.
And the ceremonial sitting and playing on Papa's lawn tractor! KTG didn't ride on it this time but J did. And he loved it. She seemd to like all the gauges and buttons.
It was a great weekend. We had lots of laughter and love going on.
And we celebrated KTG 1st birthday on Saturday and Papa's 70th birthday on Sunday. Lots of memories...new and old are flooding my mind. I have been going to this area since I was a very little girl. Somehow, standing on the beach, watching them play I knew their great grandfather was smiling down on them, knowing the family still loves the area his family had settled in long ago. Their great great uncle was the lighthouse keeper in a nearby town.
I wonder if the love of this lake is genetic?
